Who is Google?

0

No there’s no grammatical error there in the title of the post. Well, although there is, it’s intentional. Think about it. Since the time Google announced its open source android operating system for mobiles, people have wondered — why is Google launching a product that has no apparent revenue model?

The question has come to the forefront once again with the launch of T mobile’s HTC G1. The phone is pretty nifty and we especially like the flip-slider opening keyboard. Android works fairly smooth too. But coming back to what Google is up to — perhaps its recent announcement that the iPhone and T-Mobile G1 can now show Google search ads sheds a little light on the question. Is Google then going the Microsoft way? Monopoly being the name of the game. For instance, reports suggest T-Mobile’s G1 works fine with many online services, but it works especially well with Google’s. It delivers a lot of the basic core functions and of course, tight integration with Google’s products, including Gmail, Google Maps, and Google Calendar. Having said that, there is also a lack of basic features like video recording. Is it a miss out, or more like an opportunity for independent app developers?

Google has come up with a mobile application store of its own, called Android Market ala iPhone. Besides, some of Google’s latest antics include asking broadband carriers to create a special fastlane exclusively for its content. This would be done by placing Google servers in the ISP’s technical facilities. Another somewhat alarming warning sign is the removal of Firefox as the default browser in the Google code pack.

Apple’s lawsuits against HTC could be a swipe at Google

0

Apple, which has sued HTC for 20 counts of patent infringement, might have a tough time ahead of it in court. HTC has said it intends to fight the charges and is confident it can defend itself. HTC manufactures a number of smartphones based on the Android platform, including Google’s own flagship Nexus One device. Several of the patent infringement charges have been made against specific Android models. Relations between Apple and Google have soured considerably in the last few months, judging by the number of public swipes they have taken at each other and the growing number of product categories the two giants compete against each other in despite having enjoyed a close relationship in the past. Both companies now manufacture smartphones, operating systems, web browsers, and mobile application stores, with additional clashes expected in the online office suite and photo management spaces. Google CEO Eric Schmidt was also an Apple board member growing until conflicts of interest compelled him to resign. Android phones initially refrained from using multitouch gestures which Apple pioneered, though these were recently enabled.

US Towns Compete for Google’s Broadband Attention

0

When Google announced its plans to push fiber optic cables to 500,000 American homes in order to stimulate broadband adoption, they certainly got the attention of the International press. By announcing plans to build and test networks with speeds of up to 1 Gbps at competitive pricing, Google is aiming squarely at service providers who are sitting idle because they have no competition to fear.

The company’s official blog outlines a vision of streaming 3D medical imaging from a rural health clinic to an urban specialty facility and getting a live consultation alongside. For home uses, Google paints a picture of downloading full-length HD movies in less than five minutes. Now, dozens of towns and cities across the US are splashing out on innovative stunts and media campaigns in order to convince the tech behemoth to adopt them for pilot studies.

Some are towns which have so far been overlooked or feel neglected by commercial broadband providers. Efforts have ranged from creating Facebook pages and Twitter feeds to gathering citizens in the shape of the Google logo, and at least one town in Kansas has officially renamed itself to “Google” for a month.

What is VPS hosting?

What is VPS hosting?

A Virtual Private Server (VPS) is like a server in a bigger server. I know the statment is a little confusing but please don’t get panic about it.

The actual concept behind VPS is very simple – basically what VPS hosting providers do is to split a server into multiple smaller size individual servers (using virtualization technology) and rent it out to different customers. Each of these virtual servers looks and feels the same like a dedicated server except for one thing – they share the same hardware with one another.

How You Can You Benefit from VPS Hosting

Virtual private servers are designed to provide customers with a way to save money without the sacrifice of performance, flexibility and security. VPS hosting can be viewed as the perfect compromise between a shared and dedicated server, as it provides a great deal of freedom at what is usually a very reasonable price.

Here are more specific details on how you can benefit from a virtual private server:

1. Incredible Value – A VPS hosting solution can provide you with a tremendous value. While a dedicated server could end up costing you well over $100 per month, the price of a virtualized platform is usually not too far removed from shared hosting. The distinct makeup of VPS technology allows the cost of the hardware, software, network connectivity and maintenance to be efficiently distributed without compromising your quality.

2. Enhanced Protection – A virtual private server can ensure far better security than what is provided on a shared hosting platform. With the server running in the comfort of its own isolated environment, you are shielded from the stability and security issues originated by other users. Though a dedicated server offers the best performance and security, VPS hosting is not too far behind.

3. Freedom and Flexibility – What makes VPS hosting so comparable to a dedicated server is the control and flexibility it grants to you. In most arrangements, you have the option of utilizing various provided add-on scripts or installing your own custom applications. This is enabled by root access that allows you to interact deeply with the server. In terms of customization, you are generally allowed to create applications in whatever programming technologies installed on the server, be it PHP, ASP or Cold Fusion.

4. Guaranteed Power – Another major plus of VPS hosting is that it provides you with guaranteed system resources. Unlike in a shared hosting environment, you do not have to compete for most resources and have the luxury to receive accurately measured allotments that fit your specific needs. This, in turn, provides you with a robust, scalable solution that gives your business the room it needs to grow.

Google Follow Finder – Find people you’d like to follow

1

The market of Twitter apps is getting hotter day by day. It could surprise you a bit but its true, Google has come up with a Twitter app of its own – Follow Finder.

Its a cool new service that suggests you people whom you can follow on twitter.

It seems that Follow Finder suggests you people who are being followed by people you are following. It has a very cool and easy interface as it can be seen in the screenshots below.

One thing that I would like to suggest the Follow Finder team is that – along with the usernames and location of the suggested people they should also put their (twitter profile) bio or the latest tweet (that seems to be useless at that place) can be replaced by the bio of that person.
It will help the people in knowing about the tweeps who are suggested by Follow Finder.

The Follow Finder service is still in Google Labs. Google Labs is a place where Google keeps the services that are still in development but are available for users for normal use, reviews and testing.

So, what are you waiting for, go find whom you’d like to follow on twitter.
